Call for submissions: The New Scholar (Leiden Student Journal of Humanities)

27 February 2025

Have you written a great paper? Your teacher praised it – but now it is just lying around, catching virtual dust on a hard drive? Do you believe your work can help further the cause of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion?

In an upcoming special edition of The New Scholar, you can do just that! At our journal, we value the contributions of our BA or MA humanities students and are committed to publishing the best our university has to offer. This new project, generously supported by the JEDI initiative, seeks to highlight work by the student body of Leiden University that can help further justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

The New Scholar accepts papers—but also academic works in other media formats, such as posters or video essays—by students of all programs at the Faculty of Humanities. It is an open-access online journal, dedicated to showcasing Leiden's pioneering interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange of ideas. For more details, please go to our website:  https://universiteitleiden.nl/thenewscholar

This is an open call for submissions to the special JEDI edition The New Scholar, to be published in spring 2025! We welcome academic works in any format in the Humanities, including papers of up to 7000 words (not counting references and bibliography), that touch on, examine or otherwise further the initiatives of the JEDI initiative. Submissions should be in English, Dutch or German, accompanied by an English abstract. They may or may not be based on university assignments. Optionally, also include a short bio: authors must be current students or recent graduates (of max. 1 year) of our Faculty. All submissions will be double-blind peer-reviewed by researchers at the Faculty and edited by our team.

If you would like to submit your paper, please do so via our submission page. The deadline is 8 March 2025, and we are ready to receive your work immediately. Also do not hesitate with any questions or suggestions at our email thenewscholar@hum.leidenuniv.nl. We look forward to creating a strong JEDI edition together!

Yours sincerely,
