IncLUsion: helping asylum seekers find their place in the academic community

IncLUsion Leiden is a student-run initiative offering academic opportunities to asylum seekers who are not yet able to formally register for Dutch university programs. IncLUsion enables participants to attend up to two select undergraduate, English-taught courses free of charge which allows them to explore new fields of interest in disciplines ranging from Humanities and Law to Science and the Social & Behavioural Sciences.

Beyond the classroom, the program supports a strong sense of community: students benefit from a buddy-system that pairs them with current Leiden University students who help navigate the university environment, practical matters and provide a social network. By participating, students gain more than just academic insight, they become part of an inclusive and welcoming university network, strengthening their access to learning, self-development and community.

We organise a graduation ceremony and multiple social activities per semester which help students to feel at home and build a community. Additionally, we host a weekly Dutch language café that our students can attend for free to improve their Dutch language skills with the assistance of language buddies.

Become a buddy

Do you want to help refugee students feel at home at University Leiden? Are you passionate about equal education opportunities? Sign up to become a student buddy with IncLUsion!

As an IncLUsion student buddy, you’ll support IncLUsion students with practical and social matters at university and create lasting friendships.

After applying you’ll be placed in a buddy group with a fellow buddy and some IncLUsion students. In this group, you are a point of contact for the students to which they can reach out with practical questions. Additionally, you will join our social activities and contribute to community building.
