Content
The Element Key is an original, interdisciplinary method for structured improvisation that brings together music, movement, voice, poetry, and other performative forms of expression into one joint creative endeavor. It is a jam session with a flexible facilitator, where participants create together in real time, guided by a simple system of five hand gestures related to the five elements.
With this method, you discover how to collaborate based on a simple language rooted in gestures and roles, without traditional hierarchy. This creates a musical jam session that is simultaneously a form of group play and a mindful creative ritual. Based on these principles, Element Key has grown into an international artistic network with communities in Norway, Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands, where there is always room to drop by and play.
How does it work?
Instead of a strict, traditional conductor who prescribes specific keys or academic music theory, the conductor uses five hand gestures corresponding to the five elements to create an intuitive framework:
- 🧱 Earth:Provides rhythm, grounding, and repetition. It functions as the predictable anchor point or the foundation upon which other layers are built.
- 💧 Water:Invites you to follow what someone else is doing.
- 💨 Air: Free expression, feeling the openings in the composition.
- 🔥 Fire:The chance to do it alone, to take on the lead role for a moment.
- 🌌 Space: Stop, be still, and look closely. It is an invitation to silence, attentive listening, and awareness.
Thanks to this common language, participants with an extensive musical background as well as absolute beginners can collaborate in a dynamic way, where active listening always remains paramount.
Teacher
Constantin Bach (‘The C’) is a musician and artist from Stuttgart, Germany, who lives, works, and performs in the Leiden region. In addition to his work as a marine biologist, Constantin is known for creating a vibe in which the audience experiences just as much peace and comfort as listening to the sea. After performing on various stages in the Netherlands and Germany, Constantin came into contact with the Element Key method and met Benjamin Jamily, its founder. This new way of jamming immediately caught Constantin's attention because it was exactly what he was missing on his musical journey. Shortly after meeting Benjamin, Constantin began participating in Element Key jam sessions and became a certified facilitator. Back in Leiden, he began organizing regular jam sessions and became completely captivated by the process and the community.
"In times when the world is becoming increasingly chaotic, a sense of community and togetherness is essential to bring some light into the darkness we sometimes experience, and to remind us that we are not alone."
- Constantin Bach
Currently, Constantin is looking for more people to enjoy music together and invites others to become part of a global community where there is always room to play.
