As part of the European Week Against Racism, the Pan Asian Collective is organising a public installation and meme battle at the Wijnhaven building, The Hague.
Public installation
In the travelling public installation on anti-Asian racism, themes such as positionality and micro-aggressions are addressed in an accessible way. Through information panels passers-by are invited to read up on how to recognise micro-aggressions, how to deal with them, why they are harmful and why it is important to speak out.
Meme battle
With this (new) information, students are invited to participate in meme battles. Attendees are split into two groups and both groups are given the same meme templates. Each group completes the templates with their own texts referring to instances of anti-Asian racism. Once all the templates are completed, they discuss the memes and a vote takes place. The group with the most votes wins the battle.
Learn about anti-Asianism
In previous battles, dozens of students and staff participated enthusiastically, creating memes that expose and ridicule racist rhetoric and behaviour. They offer passing students and staff the opportunity to learn about anti-Asianism in a an approachable way and to share personal experiences. Our aim with this is to raise awareness about anti-Asian racism within education.
