Bicentennial Bolivia: reflections upon 200 years of independence

In the year 2025, the Plurinational State of Bolivia celebrates 200 years of existence. Upon this occasion the Latin American Studies programme, at Leiden University, will organize a number of academic events reflecting on various aspects of this country’s history, present and future.

The events cover selected topics and speakers to provide a broad approach to salient issues. Events will take place at the university’s facilities of Leiden and The Hague, and they will be held in the language of the title of the event.

  • 4 June 2025 | Bolivia: reflexions on its Bicentennial of independence, decolonization and the challenges of Plurinational State (CANCELLED)
  • September 2025 | ‘Coca is not cocaine’: decriminalizing coca in the context of international regulations on controlled substances (date and location TBA)
  • November 2025 | The ICJ’s Advisory Opinion: Proposals on Climate Change from Latin America (date and location TBA)
