LUC The Hague: Celebrating the Class of 2022

On Wednesday 6 July 2022 Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2022. The 170 students received their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree’s in LUC’s interdisciplinary honours programme Liberal Arts & Sciences: Global Challenges.

Under the silver- blue sparkle of a decorated Wijnhaven campus and outside terrace graduates received their diploma's to the applause of their guests including family, friends and loved ones. This year marked the first graduation since the start of the pandemic that was celebrated in full form with a traditional ceremony. In a jampacked auditorium for the live ceremony and a smaller lecture hall opposite the main venue, approximately 700 guests joined in on the celebration that was livestreamed online to family and friends that were unable to attend.

Rise up.. The Time is now

Starting off with a formal opening by former Dean Prof. Dr. Judi Mesman, the ceremony invited commencement speaker Mounir Samuel, a Dutch political scientist, publicist, Middle East correspondent and author with an Egyptian background. Samuel called upon the next generation of graduates to take action on the most pressing global challenges: 'the time is now!'. During the conferring on the degrees each Major convener presented their world view to the audience from their own disciplines.

Procession to Wijnhaven

Only a stone throw away from the residential college of LUC at the Anna van Buerenplein, the Wijnhaven building of Campus The Hague was the venue for the ceremony and in-person celebration for the graduates and their guests. Symbolically, the Anna van Buerenplein served as the venue where the graduates were welcomed and dressed up in their gowns before saying goodbye to the LUC Campus and leaving in a procession through the The Hague central station towards Campus Wijnhaven to receive their diploma.
