Sunny message during rainy Faculty Year Opening

It was pouring with rain during the Opening of the Faculty Year, but in the Oranjerie, Dean Henk te Velde had a positive message for those present: the faculty is in better financial shape than expected, and a reorganisation is therefore off the table.

Te Velde praised the joint efforts of all programme chairs, institutes, and other colleagues to make the faculty financially secure for the future. Combined with the reallocation of various budgets, this is enough to prevent forced redundancies and thus a reorganisation.

The dean emphasised, however, that the faculty is not done yet. ‘The length of the email (about the financial situation) is a metaphor for the long road ahead of us,’ he said. ‘We have to carry on with our efforts if we don’t want to find ourselves in the same situation in five years' time.’

Teaching Prize

For William Michael Schmidli, the afternoon became even more enjoyable when he was awarded the Faculty Teaching Prize. The Education Committee was particularly impressed by the way that  he not only educates conscientious and well-informed students, but also helps them to develop into more versatile individuals.

JEDI Fund

After a presentation of The New Scholar, one of the projects made possible by the JEDI Fund, Te Velde raised a glass with everyone present to toast the new academic year. ‘Together we make up the faculty, together we create a pleasant working environment. Please know that your efforts are appreciated.’
