Students connect generations in new podcast

A group of Leiden students launched the Van Leiden tot Later (From Leiden to Later) media platform on 27 March. In podcasts and videos, they talk with high-profile alumni about the big issues of today. ‘We want to build a bridge between generations.’

With the podcasts and videos, the students want to make room for nuance and dialogue in an increasingly polarised society. ‘In each episode, a student talks to an alumnus or someone who is linked to the university in some other way’, says one of the founders, Duco Berns. ‘We aim to bring two generations together and amplify student voices in the public debate.’

Geopolitics, climate and polarisation

Each episode is about a specific theme, such as geopolitics, climate and polarisation. They are recorded at special places in Leiden, such as the university library, the Hortus botanicus or a favourite spot of the guest. The interviews can be watched on YouTube or listened to on Spotify. Clips of the interviews are also posted on Instagram and LinkedIn. A new episode is released every fortnight.

The editorial team consists of six students from different disciplines, such as biology, history, law and political science. This helps them drill down into the details of particular topics, says Berns. ‘Everyone can take the lead in an episode that suits them. Being able to harness our creativity is what makes this such a fun project to do.’

Job Cohen: ‘I’m not a good politician’

The first episode, with Job Cohen, is now online. Student Anna Schaafsma talks with the former mayor about his career and polarisation. Cohen stresses the need for dialogue to create connection in a divided society. He shares family stories about war and freedom, and looks back on his time as leader of the PvdA party: ‘That wasn’t a great success. I’m fine as a political executive, but I’m not a good politician.’
