Keuzegids Master’s guide: which programmes score above average?

Four of Leiden University’s master’s programmes score above average across the board according to the Keuzegids Masters 2026 guide. This is based on the National Student Survey, which asks students to evaluate their own programme.

Keuzegids assesses master’s programmes at research universities and universities of applied sciences on programme content, lecturers, assessment, career preparation and atmosphere. The compilers used the results of the National Student Survey 2025.

These master’s programmes achieved above-average scores on all criteria:

  • Advanced Studies in Public International Law
  • Health, Ageing and Society
  • Child Law
  • Classics and Ancient Civilisations (research)

Seven other programmes scored above average on four of five criteria but average or below on career planning. These were:

  • Advanced Studies in Law and Finance
  • Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology
  • Philosophy
  • History
  • History (research)
  • Law and Society: Governance and Global Development
  • Literary Studies

Rector Sarah de Rijcke is proud of these programmes and the appreciation shown by students in Leiden and The Hague. ‘Our lecturers, researchers and professional staff work tirelessly to ensure our master’s are of a high quality.’ She also extended her thanks to all students who completed the National Student Survey: ‘This provides programmes with valuable insights into what is working well and what could be improved. One area of concern is career preparation. Some students feel this is lacking or not sufficiently integrated into their programme. These results give programmes a clear indication of what students need and what changes could be made.’

The National Student Survey is conducted annually at all universities and universities of applied sciences and is commissioned by Landelijk Centrum Studiekeuze. Keuzegids compares each programme’s scores with the averages for higher professional education or higher education in the same year.
