Henk Hoekstra to become Scientific Director of Leiden Observatory from January 2027

Henk Hoekstra will take up the role of Scientific Director of Leiden Observatory on 1 January 2027. He succeeds Ignas Snellen, who has served in the position since 16 August 2022. Hoekstra has been appointed for a four-year term.

Henk Hoekstra is Professor of Observational Cosmology and studies dark matter and dark energy using gravitational lensing. He is currently cosmology coordinator for the ESA Euclid mission.

An experienced administrator who builds connections
Dean Jasper Knoester welcomes Hoekstra’s appointment as Scientific Director of the Observatory. ‘Henk is a highly respected astronomer and brings extensive administrative experience, both within and beyond the Faculty. The Faculty Board knows him well as a member of the Faculty Council. We recognise him as someone who builds connections and we have great confidence in our future collaboration.’

Ignas Snellen to remain longer
Ignas Snellen has agreed to remain in post slightly beyond his four-year term. His appointment has been extended from 16 August to 31 December 2026.
