Cosmos Malabaricus Pilot Scholarship
Cosmos Malabaricus is an upcoming project of Leiden University, The Netherlands and Indian partner institutions that aims to make the digitized archival sources of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu Archives more accessible to Indian and international scholars and to the widest possible audience, in particular to the people of Kerala. This will be achieved (a) by further developing the existing digital Dutch- and English-language inventories of their contents, (b) by transcribing, translating and editing a selection of these sources to produce a series of source publications, and (c) by capacity building in India: training Indian archivists and historians (and related scholars) in the use (incl. palaeography, epigraphy) of these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sources for the purpose of further research and heritage making and in the wider context of Indian Ocean studies. In preparation of the project, the Leiden Institute for History provides a Cosmos Malabaricus Pilot scholarship for an outstanding Indian graduate history student to do an MA in (Colonial and Global) History with a specialization in the early modern history of Kerala as based on Dutch archival sources. Following the regular one-year MA programme, the student will receive specialist training in the Dutch language and the Dutch colonial archive for another 6 months.
