Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not able to log in with my student account. What should I do?
There are several reasons why you may not be able to log in:
- You haven’t yet received a user name and/or password. Request an account.
- You have forgotten your user name and/or password. Request them again.
- Your account has not yet been activated. Activate your account.
- Your password has expired. Reset your password.
- Your ULCN account is no longer active. You can only access uSis and Brightspace using your ULCN account up to 60 days after your student registration has been cancelled.
If you know your user name and password, keep the following points in mind:
- You must log in with your user name, not your uMail address.
- Use lower case letters to enter your user name, not capital letters (e.g. s1234567).
- Make sure you haven’t accidentally put CAPS LOCK on.
If you still can’t log in, do the following:
- Change the language on the log-in page, from Dutch to English or vice versa, and try again.
- If you can log into one application but not another, the issue concerns the application and not your account. Contact the ISSC Helpdesk.
- If none of the above-mentioned tips work contact the ISSC helpdesk.
How can I change the passport photo on my LU card?
First upload your new photo under 'my profile' in Account Self Service. Then go to a LU card helpdesk to have your current LU card blocked and request a new LU card. Be aware that you may have to pay for this service. Always take along your current LU card and valid ID.
I have questions or problems concerning uMail, or setting up email forwarding. What can I do?
Visit the uMail page for information on uMail and setting up email forwarding, problem-solving tips, and where to turn for assistance.
How do I activate my LU-Card?
When will I get a confirmation that I have paid my tuition fees?
If you are registered in Studielink you can follow your status using the progress indicators in Studielink. This indicator will only change in Studielink once the bank authorisation has been processed by the student administration department or once your payment has been received (if you transferred it directly).
If you are awaiting binding study advice (BSA), your payment status will remain on hold – even if you have already paid. We can only approve your payment once you receive positive BSA and can progress to the second year of your Bachelor’s programme.

What should I do if the online verification is not successful?
Can I backdate the termination of my student registration?
No, it is not possible to back-date the termination of your student registration, in other words you cannot de-register with retroactive effect.
Student registration can only be terminated at the earliest as of the first of the month following the month in which you submit a request to de-register. Requests to terminate student registration must be done via Studielink.
Do not forget to also cancel your Dutch student finance and student travel pass (OV-kaart) if applicable. For more information contact the Front Office of the Student Affairs Department at Plexus Student Centre.

I haven’t (yet) received my LU card. What should I do?
There can be a number of reasons why you haven’t yet received your LU card:
- You have not yet uploaded a passport photo through Account Self Service.
- The university does not have your correct address; check this in Studielink or at the Student Affairs Front Office. If your address is correct after all, go to one of the LU Card helpdesks to request a new card.
- You have previously had a LU Card. In that case you can only request a new one at an LU Card helpdesk.
- You are an exchange student. In that case you will find more information here on how to request a new LU-card.
For further assistance, contact the Student Affairs Front Office.
I am an international student and have requested housing via uSis. When will I hear more?
On approx. 15 June (for studies starting in September) or 30 November (for studies starting in February) you will receive an email letting you know whether:
- you applied in time and will soon be given access to the housing reservation portal, OR
- too many students applied before you so you will be put on a housing waiting list in case any other students withdraw, or you can choose to request a refund of your housing fee,
For students who applied in time, Leiden University will soon after begin sending activation emails for the housing reservation portal. After you have activated your account, you can log-in and reserve one of the rooms or apartments set aside for Leiden University's international students.
