Yes, you can apply for the Honours College even if some of your first-year results are still pending. Simply submit your application with the results you have received.

In August, a continuation check takes place. We will check that, by the end of your first year, you have obtained 60 EC in your bachelor’s programme and achieved a GPA of at least 7.0. If you have taken a first-year honours course, we will also check that you have successfully completed this course.

If you do not meet the continuation requirements, you will be notified via your Umail account. If you do not hear from us, you can proceed with your course registration.

You can download your grade list in uSis. Log in to uSis and click on ‘Transcript’. Your transcript will open in your browser, where you can download it and save it as a PDF.

Yes, this is possible in principle. In some cases, however, you have to ask permission from the board of examiners. For the Leiden Leadership Programme, there is also an attendance requirement, which makes combination with certain activities difficult or impossible. Therefore, we ask you to discuss your situation with the LLP. Please send an e-mail to honourscollege@ha.leidenuniv.nl.

At the Honours College, you will meet like-minded students from other bachelor's programmes. What honours students have in common is a shared curiosity and eagerness to learn about various disciplines.

It is important to remember that the Honours College is an extra programme that students need to make time for. Hence, the people that join tend to be very intrinsically motivated to develop themselves, meet new people and broaden their horizons. 

Many honours courses take place after 17:00 hrs or on Friday afternoon, so that interference with regular classes is reduced as much as possible. Please note: This does not apply to all honours courses. Always check your availability before you apply for an honours course. 

Honours credits and regular credits are both part of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, the standardized academic credit system in Europe.

However, Honours College credits are extracurricular. This means they cannot be used towards your regular bachelor’s degree, for example as elective credits. If you take an honours course, it will be listed separately on your bachelor’s diploma supplement. If you complete the Honours College (20 EC) and meet the certification requirements, you will also receive a certificate.

Pass/fail means you do not receive a numerical grade, but either a pass or a fail for a course. This system focuses more on the learning process and helps reduce stress, as there is no final single assessment. It is usually combined with more assignments and regular feedback throughout the course.

Various Honours College courses use a pass/fail system. You can check in the prospectus whether this applies to a specific course. 

Yes, honours courses generally require mandatory attendance. Please check whether the course timetable fits with your bachelor’s timetable, before listing it as a preference in the course registration process. 

Yes, you can take part in an exchange programme or do an internship while you are an Honours College student. Be sure to plan your 20 EC of honours courses around the semester you will be away. The easiest way to do this is by taking a 5 EC course in your first bachelor’s year and/or taking a 10 EC course.

Please note that any credits you may earn with an internship cannot be counted towards the Honours College. 

If you start the Honours College in your first year, you will do so by taking a first-year course in semester 2. These 5 EC courses are designed for first-year students and provide a good insight into what honours education entails. You register for a first-year course when you apply to the Honours College.

In your second and third year, you can choose from all Honours College courses designed for second- and third-year students, including some 10 EC courses. You may register for these Honours College courses during the registration periods listed on the course registration page.

You can find the exact range of modules on offer in the Prospectus. With the catalogue number you find in the Prospectus, you can also view a course's timetable via MyTimetable. For more information, please also see the page on course registration.

It is your own responsibility as an Honours College student to stay informed about the course registration periods. The Honours College Team does try to help remind you, though:

• Did you start at the Honours College in 2025-2026 or later? After admission to the Honours College, you will be added to a Brightspace page. A notice will be posted here when course registration opens.
   
• Did you start at the Honours College in 2024-2025 or earlier? Then you will receive an email on your Umail address when course registration opens. 

It's possible that a course receives more applications than there are places available. That is why we ask you to list minimum 3, maximum 4 preferences for each course application. By asking students to list multiple preferences, we can ensure that all students are placed in a course that matches their interests. 

Are you taking a 10 EC Honours course that runs for the whole academic year? If so, you do not need to re-enrol for this course during the second registration period.

A GPA of 7.0 is an entry requirement for the Honours College, because it shows that you are able to follow an additional programme, without affecting your regular bachelor’s studies.

After you have entered the Honours College, we assume you will maintain a GPA of at least 7.0 during your bachelor's. However, this is not a strict requirement for certification. To receive an Honours College certificate, you must meet the following requirements:

• You have completed 20 EC of honours courses.
• You have completed your bachelor's degree and the Honours College within four years. 

Should your participation in the Honours College begin to affect your regular bachelor’s studies, we kindly ask you to reconsider your participation and prioritise your regular studies.

If you are admitted to the Honours College, we expect that you are able and willing to complete your bachelor’s degree within the standard three years. As honours students are very active and often engage in a range of activities alongside their regular studies, we recognise that, in practice, this three-year period can be restrictive. This has been taken into account when drawing up the certification requirements. To receive an Honours College certificate, you must meet the following requirements:

• You have completed 20 EC of honours courses.
• You have completed your bachelor's degree and the Honours College within four years. 

If you do not meet the requirements, all completed Honours courses will still be included on your diploma supplement. You will, however, not receive an Honours College certificate.
