Course and exam enrolment
Are you a visiting exchange student? In most cases, you do not need to enrol on courses yourself. Your faculty will do this for you. Click on your Exchange - Faculty tab for details.
Compulsory for all components
You must enrol for all components of your study programme, such as lectures, seminars and exams. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
Exceptions
Are you an exchange student, are you following a pre-master programme, or are you following courses whilst being registered at another Dutch university? If so, different enrolment procedures apply. You will receive further information by email. Or for exchange students, see the information on your Exchange - Faculty tab.
Plan and enrol via MyStudymap
You can enrol via MyStudymap. In this system you can also plan your enrolments in advance. This means you can plan everything in your own time, then submit all your course enrolments in one go at the start of the enrolment period. Please note: your enrolment plan is not an actual enrolment and does not guarantee you a place.

Enrolment deadlines
Courses
- You can find the enrolment deadlines for each course in the prospectus.
- For most courses, you can enrol till maximum 5 days before the course is due to start.
Exams
- You must enrol for your exams at least 10 days before the exam date. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate. So don’t forget!
- Missed the deadline? Check on your faculty or study programme tab whether you can still enrol.
- In the academic year 2025-2026, there is a pilot scheme in place whereby you might be permitted to sit an exam without prior enrolment.
Busy periods: ticket system
During busy periods, MyStudymap makes use of a ticket system to prevent the system becoming overloaded. This works as follows:
- When you access MyStudymap, you will be put on a waiting list. You can see your place on the waiting list and an estimate of how long you will have to wait. You can also set up an email alert to notify you when it's your turn.
- Once it's your turn, you will have ten minutes in which to log in. If you don't log in, you will be allocated a new place on the waiting list.
- Once you are logged in, you can go ahead with your planning and enrolment.
Status of your enrolments
On the status screen in MyStudymap you can see if your enrolment has been successful. If so, you will be given access to the course environment in Brightspace and the course will appear in your personal timetable in MyTimetable. Please note: it can become very busy at the start of the enrolment period so you may have to wait until the next day for your enrolment to be processed.
Exam enrolment - pilot scheme for emergencies
In the academic year 2025-2026, there is a pilot scheme in place whereby you might be permitted to sit an exam without prior enrolment.
How it works
- Report to the exam location.
- You will be asked to sign a ‘conditional participation’ form and will be placed on a waiting list.
- Participation is not guaranteed - you can only take part if there is space available.
- You may only start the exam 45 minutes after it begins; enrolled students who arrive late will be given priority.
- The exam will still end at the regular time.
- You are not entitled to any additional facilities, such as extra time for students with disabilities.
- Afterwards, the student administration will check that you were eligible to sit the exam.
Last resort – not a substitute for enrolment
This pilot is intended as a last resort only. Always make sure to enrol on time to avoid stress and to ensure you can take the exam under the right conditions.
Pilot may be discontinued in case of disruption
If the pilot scheme causes too much disruption to students who enrolled on time, the university may decide to end the pilot early.

Register for the course and the resit
Register for every course and workgroup via MyStudyMap. Some courses and workgroups have a limited number of participants, so register on time (before the course starts). In uSis you can access your personal schedule and view your results. The starting dates and times for course registration can be found on the courses' e-Prospectus pages. If you have trouble registering for courses, check the e-Prospectus and MyTimetable for more information. Some courses only have workgroups, or require a choice between thematic subjects after which group arrangements are made by the faculty. You will get more information during the introduction meeting. First year students will be registered for semester 1 by the OSC.
Leiden University uses Brightspace as its online learning management system. After enrolment for the course in uSis you will be automatically enrolled in the Brightspace environment of this course.
Exams
We schedule the first chance exams on basis of your enrolment for the course in uSis.
Students who want to make use of the resit, should enroll for this in MyStudyMap. Make sure you use the correct activity number at registration, can be found on the examination timetable. See the FAQ for more information. You can enroll until 10 days before the resit.
Important rules on resits

The most important rules on resits are:
- Register for participation in retakes.
- Sufficient grades may never be retaken.
- MA students may always participate in a retake unless they have passed an exam.
- It is not mandatory for MA students to participate in the first opportunity.
- Exceptions to the above mentioned rules can only be made with consent of the Board of Examiners.
