On the Leiden University website, each programme has its Student Portal. You should use this portal as a starting point for information. From here, you can find more about the programme content, the e-Prospectus, support options but also direct access to information systems with your ULCN-account. Therefore, we recommend you to bookmark this page in your browser.

• Student Card & LU Card

As a new student, you are provided with a LU Card. This card is multifunctional and is important if attending on-campus education, as it not only acts as your University ID, but functions as a door key to access specific rooms (e.g. bicycle parking, or main entrance after 19.00). Further, you need your LU Card to use copiers and printers at the campus, and to borrow books from the library.

Further, you do receive a student card. This card is your proof of registration as a student at Leiden University. Please note that you should take with you both the LU Card as well as the student card when going to the campus. Only the combination of both cards proves that you are a fully registered student of Leiden University with access to its facilities.

• ULCN-account

Very important in times of online education is your ULCN-account. This is your Leiden University account, with which you can access all university information systems such as uSis, uMail, Brightspace and the Digital Library. It consists of the letter ‘s’ as a prefix, followed by your student ID number, e.g. s1234567. As ULCN is designed as a single sign-on system, your password is identical for all systems at Leiden University.

Programme overview

The CSM programme consists of main courses as well as specialisation courses. 
A semester consists of 2 blocks. Each block takes 7 weeks of education. After each block, there will be one week reserved for examinations in general. It depends on the assessment methods of your courses whether or not you will be facing examinations, as papers or other assessment types will be used we well by CSM lecturers.

The main courses are mandatory to all students regardless their specialisation and consist of 4 or 5 ECTS credits. The specialisation courses consists of 10 ECTS credits and generally involve two physical meetings per week of three hours.

February students start in Block 3 of the academic year. They follow exactly the same courses together with September students. February students will then study block 1 and 2 with the following September cohort.

Before starting with CSM, you have to register in MyStudymap for the main course as well as the course from your specialisation in block 1. You can find more information on registration in the ‘Our Information Systems’ section below.

Registration for the electives will open in uSis on 8 March 2023 at 13:00CET. You will receive a reminder about this early March. There is a cap on student numbers for each of the elective courses, and places on the courses will be granted on a first come first serve basis, so make sure to have a plan B in case your preferred elective is full.

The e-Prospectus (online study guide)

The e-Prospectus is the online study guide of Leiden University. In the CSM section, you can find detailed course descriptions comprising outlines, literature and assessment information. Further, you can find transitional arrangements and Course & Examination Regulations. This online study guide is leading: the course syllabus must follow the information in the e-Prospectus.

Course and Exam Regulations

Please note that the e-Prospectus is following the Course and Exam Regulations. This document is the judicial backbone of the CSM programme. Although it is a technical document, it is good to know about its existence. In case of requests or appeals to the Board of Examiners, there will be a lot of referencing to the Course and Exam Regulations.

Board of Examiners

The role of the Board of Examiners is to ensure that study programmes adhere to their Course and Examination Regulations. The Board of Examiners oversees all tests and examinations within the institute and determines whether students have acquired the knowledge and skills required for the awarding of their degree.

Next to the CER mentioned above, the Board of Examiners relies on the Rules and Regulations.

Locations in The Hague

Leiden University - Campus the Hague comprises four locations, all located close to The Hague Central Station and the A12 motorway:

Wijnhaven building, Turfmarkt 99, The Hague
On this location, most of your classes will take place. Further, you will find the library and supporting services such as the student advisors. The offices of CSM are located here.

Schouwburgstraat building, Schouwburgstraat 2, The Hague
Occasionally you have lectures in the Auditorium, or simulation classes in the Living Lab.

LUC building, Anna van Buerenplein 301, The Hague
Some lectures with big audiences take place at this location.

Stichthage, Koningin Julianaplein 10, The Hague
Occasionally you have lectures at this location.

Always check your timetable to know when and where your lectures or seminars will take place!

My StudyMap

MyStudymap replaces uSis and the student app: here you can find your courses and examinations.

Registration for exams in My Studymap is mandatory for physical exams. Please note that you will also be asked to reconfirm your registration via email. Exam dates will be added to your personal schedule in uSis. Eventually, your final grades will be published in uSis as well. 

The student portal helps you plan your studies, enroll for courses and exams and is the place where you confirm your participation in exams. The different steps and functionalities are explained in de articles on this webpage.

uSis

uSis is the University's student administration system. All students are registered in uSis and can use it to keep track of their study progress. Eventually, your final grades will be published in uSis as well.

Brightspace

Brightspace is the online learning system at Leiden University. Every CSM course can be found in Brightspace. These pages give you access to the course syllabus, literature lists, course slides and additional information concerning a course. Furthermore, you must use Brightspace to hand in assignments and papers. You can check the results of exams and assignments in Grade Book.

Please note: you do not need to enroll in Brightspace for courses, this is automatically done after you are registered in uSis via MyStudymap. Without registration for a regular course in MyStudymap you cannot access its corresponding course in Brightspace.

We also have a dedicated channel/course for general announcements concerning the Crisis and Security Management programme. Not only do we publish vital announcements there, but we will also post interesting (online) activities and internship opportunities.

uMail

The uMail platform is the default tool at Leiden University for e-mail communication between students, teachers and department staff. You will receive an uMail address as part of your registration process with the university. Please check your uMail daily. Your uMail is not only used for communication with teachers or fellow students, but for acknowledgements as well, such as course registrations, receipts of assignments and grades. You can also check uMail on your
smartphone, by the webmail interface or as an additional box in your mail application. Forwarding is also possible in uMail, but please keep an eye on your mailbox quota: if you exceed your quota, forwarding is ceased until you clean up. You will not get a notification, so please clean regularly when using forwarding. education!

ICT services

This webpage will lead you to an overview of ICT services available to Leiden University students. This overview offers a good starting point to all of our students regarding available services, especially when studying online from home. A good example is the availability of the Microsoft Office 365 suite because of an agreement between Leiden University and Microsoft, so students can download and install this software to their machines, making online studying and cooperating with fellow students much easier.

Another useful ICT service is Surfspot: here students can acquire software such as Adobe and SPSS with strongly reduced prices. Please note that the license of software acquired via Surfspot is based on your registration as a student at Leiden University. Use your ULCN credentials to log in.

Digital Library / Books

The number of books that CSM students need to buy are kept to a minimum, if any. Although you can look for books and articles in the physical library, many titles are available in our digital library as well. After login with your ULCN credentials, you can access most articles and many books in full-text PDF format. Printing of these texts is possible with your LU Card, for those who prefer marking and underlining important text passages. Further, via the online library you have access to information databanks, so take some time to browse through the support pages of the library. We strongly recommend to do so to all of our students, especially in these times of online education.
You can access the Digital Library via internet from anywhere in the world, providing full flexibility to study whenever and wherever you wish. Keep in mind that when working outside from the Leiden University computer network, you might have to submit your credentials a couple of times for extra verification.

Study advisor

We have three study advisors: Sofie Delpeut, JanPieter van Borssum Waalkes and Timo Schmal. The study advisors set up personal study plans together with our students. Further, they act as your first point of contact for support with your studies. They can advise or inform you on matters such as the content and structure of the programme, rules and regulations, but also when personal circumstances affect
your study progress. Further, if you need special facilities because of a disability, then the study advisors are your starting point as well. Don’t wait too long to get in touch with the advisors, as this might prevent further complications. Depending on the nature of your questions, the study advisors may forward you to the student counsellors or the student psychologists.
