De onstuitbare opmars van de N.V. Zuid-Korea

De professionele geschiedbeoefening en de populaire geschiedenis staan niet los van elkaar, integendeel: ze beïnvloeden elkaar. Dat is het uitgangspunt van het nieuwe, peer reviewed tijdschrift ‘Korean Histories’ waarvan onlangs het eerste nummer online ging.

Noord-Koreaanse dwangarbeiders worden nog altijd tewerkgesteld in de Europese Unie. Volgens onderzoekers, waaronder hoogleraar Koreastudies Remco Breuker van de Universiteit Leiden, nemen ook Nederlandse bedrijven schepen af van een werf die Noord-Koreanen inzet.

Koreaspecialist Koen De Ceuster heeft zo’n 1200 posters uit Noord-Korea samengebracht in een database. De posters zijn volgens De Ceuster van onschatbare waarde voor wetenschappers die het gesloten land beter willen bestuderen. De database wordt op 15 juni gepresenteerd in Leiden.

Korea biedt het westen kansen, onder meer op cultureel en economisch vlak, als we onszelf over onze Azië-angst heenzetten. Ook kan zo een verwoestende oorlog met Noord–Korea worden voorkomen, betoogt hoogleraar Koreastudies Remco Breuker. Over zijn onderzoek is nu een webdossier online.

Er is veel mythevorming over Noord-Korea, zegt hoogleraar Koreastudies Remco Breuker. Om die tegen te gaan richt hij een onderzoekscentrum op: 'Leiden iNK', het Leiden initiatieve on Northern Korea. 21 september houdt Breuker zijn oratie.

Lezing

Professor Ra Jong-yil is één van de bekendste wetenschappers op het gebied van internationale betrekkingen in Noordoost-Azië. Ra geeft op 7 mei in Leiden een lezing over het menselijke prijskaartje van de verdeling van het Koreaanse schiereiland. Een prijskaartje dat meestal niet zichtbaar is.

In Peking stond opeens een groene trein met een gele streep. En hij zat erin: Kim Jong-un bracht een bezoek aan China. De Amerikanen roepen dat de pressie op de Noord-Koreaanse leider zijn vruchten heeft afgeworpen en dat deze daarom naar het land afreisde.
