From the battery in your phone powered by cobalt mined in the DRC to lithium in Bolivia, critical raw materials are everywhere. They are essential to the green energy transition, but what are the consequences of their extraction for communities and regions around the world?
In this second session of the series Critical Matters, we delve deeper into the extraction of critical raw materials. We explore what the global demand for critical raw materials means for countries in the Global South, and how it creates new geopolitical power structures. How do we look at the violation of international human rights laws and climate agreements related to extraction of these resources?
We are opening with a keynote by Jacqueline Persson, climate policy specialist at Oxfam Novib. Following the keynote, Jacqueline Persson is joined for a panel discussion by Jeleel Balyaminu and Dr. Soledad Valdivia of Leiden University. Jeleel Balyaminu is currently doing a PhD at the African Studies Centre Leiden, researching Mining Regulations in Africa. Soledad Valdivia is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for History at the Department of Latin America Studies. She focuses on Bolivia and researches the effects on local and indigenous communities.
