Take part in a Student for a Day at MSc Crisis and Security Management

If you decide to join this Student for a Day event, you:

  • attend the lecture 'Effects of Violent Victimisation' of the course 'Introduction to Violence and Policing' by Dr. Olga Bogolyubova;
  • meet the student ambassador Job Van de Waeter;
  • will have the possibility to ask all your questions about Crisis and Security Management, specialisation Violence, Interventions, and Policing.

Programme

08.40 hrs. Start your Student for a Day at Wijnhaven. The reception will scan your personal QR code
09.15 - 12.00 hrs. Attend the lecture 'Effects of Violent Victimisation'
12.00 - 12.15 hrs. You can ask questions during the break or after the lecture

The lecture is at another location. So please be on time at Wijnhaven.

About this lecture

In this lecture, the effects of experiencing or being otherwise exposed to violent victimisation
(e.g. as a witness) will be discussed. We will be primarily focusing on the psychological impact
of such experiences. We will consider the psychology and psychophysiology of human stress
response and then delve deeper into the topic of traumatic stress and its mental health
effects. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other relevant mental health conditions
will be discussed. Childhood adverse experiences and their effects will be given special
attention. In addition, we will also touch upon the syndemic of substance abuse, violence,
and diseases, such as HIV/AIDS.
