Vacancy: Research assistants project 'Governing Delivery Platform Companies' (Deadline: 1 May)

21 April 2023

For a research project Governing Delivery Platform Companies, Dr. Yujing Tan (BA International Studies), Dr. Crystal Ennis (Institute for Area Studies), and Dr. Shivant Jhagroe (Institute of Public Administration) are looking for 5-6 BA (third year) students and MA students, as research assistants (RAs), who are willing to help us to conduct interviews.

The project studies how multinational food delivery platform companies interact with local authorities, workers, and communities.

The profile of the RAs we are looking for is:

  • Someone who had finished some social science courses (e.g. sociology, political economy, international political economy, anthropology, etc.)
  • Preferably with part-time or intern experience in delivery platform companies (including Uber Eats, Gorillas, Getir, Ochama, Thuisbezorgd, etc)
  • Who can conduct interviews in Dutch, English, Arabic, or Chinese
  • Understand migrant communities or preferably with contacts in migrant communities in the Netherlands (could be friends and family)

We ask from every participant to conduct 5-6 interviews among delivers working for platform companies in Amsterdam, Leiden, and the Hague. These respondents are to be identified by the interviewer within their own social environment. Every interview will be processed into a neat interview report (with a transcription of 40-60 minutes interview). The monthly payment is based on the salary of 0.2 Fte (7,6 weekly hours) of the fulltime researcher (BA3 Fulltime – 2400 euros/month; MA Fulltime – 2610 euros/month) at Leiden University.

The first-round interviews will be conducted in May and last for 1 month (30,4hours). (Please note: the actual payment of salary would be in June, not May.)

Prior to the interviews, it is mandatory for the participants to physically join a 3-hour training spread out over 2 sessions at the beginning of May (dates would be selected due to participants’ agenda).

Those who are interested can apply by sending their resume in an email to Dr. Yujing Tan (y.tan.5@hum.leidenuniv.nl). The title of the email should include “Governing Delivery Platform Companies + your own name”. Please make sure you include in your email or resume information on your language skills and whether you have any prior experience as a delivery worker, interviewer, or interpreter. We will make a selection among the applicants as soon as we receive your CV.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Yujing Tan: y.tan.5@hum.leidenuniv.nl

Deadline of application: May 1, 2023.
