Peel Slowly and See

Date
Friday 10 March 2023 - Saturday 11 March 2023
Address
Gebr. de Nobel | Scheltema | Marksteeg10 (Leiden)

Since 2020, the Leiden festival Peel Slowly and See has taken place on the stages of Gebr. De Nobel, Scheltema Leiden and Marktsteeg 10, in Leidse Cultuurkwartier. The festival is coordinated by a collaborative group of programmers from Leiden. This has created its characteristic musical breadth in recent years; you can see the latest British jazz formation, but also crackling electronica, intriguing non-Western music and contrary guitar bands

Leiden University's Academy for Performing Arts (ACPA) has invariably selected a surprising and adventurous addition to the festival programme in recent years. This year, Brazilian sound artists Caeso and Paulo Dantas will be presenting two pieces from their own creative outputs. Both musicians are working on their PhD research at the ACPA at Leiden University.

Paulo Dantas

About Paulo Dantas

Paulo Dantas (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, 1981) works as musician and sound artist, teacher and sound technician. For the past years he's been teaching Experimental Music and Music Analysis at UNIRIO (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's State), with a special focus on artistic uses of the practice of field recording; on the impacts of notions of ‘indeterminacy’ and 'collaboration' on creative processes; on providing access to basic music/sound production techniques on softwares that cost no money; and on music analysis. In his recent artistic production, he has been interested in promoting dialogues between music, phonography, sound design and other art forms, through speculative uses of different recording devices, synthesizers, texts and other objects.

Silêncios, assim como as montanhas, serão consumidos pela vida (eventualmente) ("Silences, as mountains, will be consumed by life (eventually)"), is the result of a collaboration between Paulo Dantas (music/sounds) and multimedia artist Thiago Rocha Pitta (video). It was commissioned by Festival Novas Frequências (Brazil), and produced during an artistic residency at Fundação Abismo (Abyss Foundation), in Petrópolis/Brazil.

About Caeso

Caeso (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 1988) is a musician and sound artist, his creative output is diverse, exploring mediums such as acousmatic music, live electronics, free improvisation and also traditional written composition, besides building sound sculptures, videos and other multimedia artworks. Holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree in Music Composition, and is a docARTES PhD candidate on artistic research in music at Orpheus Institute (BE) and Leiden University (NL).
