We are excited to announce a hands-on workshop on manifestoes as a critical and speculative praxis for anthropology. A manifesto is a public declaration calling for a better world, often tailored to the needs, hopes, and struggles of a particular community or shared activity. In some ways, it’s a form of prefigurative politics: performing the change you want to see in the world. In others, it is a creative output – bridging writing, drawing, zine- and sticker-making, and design practices.
The workshop
During the first half of the workshop, we’ll explore the entanglements between anthropology and manifestoes – their shared histories and ambitions, inspiring examples, failed utopian visions, and more. In the second half, we’ll invite all present to make their own manifesto – tailored to the field of anthropology. Organised by The Field and the Classroom research cluster, the intention of the workshop is to stimulate debate on critical and experimental formats of publishing. We build upon our findings from earlier workshops on zine-making.
What to bring
While no preparation is necessary, you may bring materials (written, visual, tangible) relating to a topic you would like to assemble into a manifesto. For instance: a copy of (GDPR friendly) fieldnotes, sketches or pictures that you can adapt to or present in new contexts.
As manifestoes have a legacy of cooperative and collaborative practices, we invite attendees to consider joining as a collective. It is also possible to work on an individual project.
