Following the removal of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro from power in a US special forces operation in January, Latin America has entered a new era. After decades of withdrawal, a newly assertive America is very much "back" in the region. The administration of President Trump appears determined to exert influence on Latin America's political direction and to limit the role of key global actors, notably China and Russia, in what it sees as America's backyard. But to what extent does this represent a revival of the fabled Monroe Doctrine? And what are the future implications for the region's political and economic development and security environment?

Tackling these issues, this event will draw on contributions from Prof. Edmund Amann, Dr. Håvar Solheim and Prof. Patricio Silva. It will be chaired by Dr. Soledad Valdivia Rivera.

Following the panel, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. Drinks and snacks will be served at a borrel directly afterwards.
