Children’s Rights Scholarship 1

The Children’s Rights Scholarship 1 is intended for students who wish to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights and meet all criteria for admission.

For who

Students who wish to follow, and meet the admission criteria for, the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship you must: 

  • be a national of a country with medium (113-151) or low (152-189) ranking on the HDI Index - see the UNDP website.
  • lack the financial means to follow the study programme without the assistance of a scholarship.
  • be highly motivated to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights.

Note: Applicants from single parent families and families depending on social assistance schemes are given priority.

Obligations

The applicant must have the firm intention of returning to their home country after graduation and bringing into practice the knowledge obtained during the programme, in order to improve the implementation of international children’s rights in their home country.

Exclusions

You cannot be awarded a Children’s Rights Scholarship 1 if:

  • you will follow a study programme other than the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights at Leiden University.

Scholarship amount

There are two scholarships available, each of €15,000. The scholarship takes the form of a contribution towards the tuition fee (the total tuition fee is €19,300). The duration of the scholarship is one year.

Note that the Children’s Rights Scholarship 1 is not a full scholarship and only covers part of the tuition fee. Non-EEA recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.

Application process

  1. Submit an online application for admission to the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights  and pay the application fee of € 100. Don't forget to upload a valid English test result in your application. 
  2. In your online application (uSis), click on the scholarship tab and take the following steps: 
    • Indicate that you want to apply for the Children’s Rights Scholarship 1.
    • Upload a letter of motivation for the Children’s Rights Scholarship 1 that briefly explains:  
      • your financial situation and why you are unable to follow the programme without a scholarship;
      • your reasons for wishing to follow the study programme. 
    • Click on 'submit'.

Note that your scholarship application will only be processed after you have submitted your application for admission and your scholarship application via Leiden University’s online application portal (uSis), and have paid the application fee.

Selection process

Candidates for the scholarship are selected by the Admission Board of the programme and the organisation providing the scholarship. Scholarship decisions will be announced in the first week of May 2024.

Finding housing

Be aware that finding housing in Leiden, The Hague and the surrounding area can be challenging due to the limited availability of affordable student accommodation. Background

The Children’s Rights Scholarship 1 is a private scholarship.

Additional financial information

This is not a full scholarship. Students must be able to fund the remainder of the tuition fee (€ 5,900), their travel, housing and living costs. You can find information on monthly living costs in the Netherlands on our financial matters page
