Programme and time commitment

1. How much time does the Leiden Leadership Programme cost?

The programme consists of 15 EC, equivalent to 420 study hours spread over November to June. This works out to approximately 12 hours per week on average. In practice, the bulk of the time investment falls on the practical assignment (Leadership Lab) in the second semester.

2. Can I do the Leiden Leadership Programme alongside an internship?

This is possible. The Leiden Leadership Programme mostly takes place in the evenings between 5:15 PM and 9:00 PM. Please note that strict attendance is required, and classes are not conducted online. The skills trainings can be scheduled on various days, including Saturdays. It's important that you can occasionally visit your partner organization during office hours in the second semester as well. Discuss with your internship company beforehand what is feasible regarding scheduling.

3. Can I do the Leiden Leadership Programme alongside a clinical internship?

Yes this this is possible, but can be complicated. The Leiden Leadership Programme mostly takes place in the evenings between 5:15 PM and 9:00 PM, and has a strict attendance requirement and no online classes. The skills trainings can be scheduled on different days, including Saturdays. Furthermore, it's important that you can occasionally visit your practical organization during office hours.

It is more practical to follow the programme during your science internship (wetenschapsstage), elective clinical internships (keuzecoschappen), or semi-doctor's clinical internship (semi-artscoschap). During the waiting period for your clinical internships, it is not a problem as long as you are enrolled at Leiden University.

4. How are student teams assembled for the practical assignment?

The partner organisations vary in size, structure and culture – ranging from businesses to government bodies and NGOs. LLP ensures that these organisations are carefully matched with the student teams. The student teams are composed by the programme management of the LLP based on academic background, gender, and language. The LLP organisation strives to create teams that are as diverse as possible.

5. Can I combine the LLP with other activities, such as a year at a student board or top-level sporting?

Yes, this is possible in principle. In some cases, however, you have to ask permission from the board of examiners. For the Leiden Leadership Programme, there is also an attendance requirement, which makes combination with certain activities difficult or impossible. Therefore, we ask you to discuss your situation with the LLP. Please send an e-mail to leadership@ha.leidenuniv.nl.

Upon successful completion of the LLP

1. Will I receive a certificate for successfully completing the Leiden Leadership Programme?

Upon successful completion of the Leiden Leadership Programme, you will receive a certificate. Your study result will also appear on your diploma as an extracurricular activity.

2. Will my grade be added to my transcript of records after I successfully complete the Leiden Leadership Programme?

The LLP credits do not count as an elective in your regular study programme. However, your grade for the LLP will appear as an extracurricular activity on your diploma supplement.
