Application and admission
How can you apply for the Pre-PhD Programme, and what are the selection criteria?
Application procedure
The deadline for applications for the PPP is 23 November 2025. The application procedure differs per track.
Track 1
Track 1 is only open to master's students enrolled in master's programme at the Faculty of Law at Leiden University. Students can express their interest to the coordinator of their master's programme. The coordinator may decide to nominate the student for the PPP. In October, the master's programme will inform students about the procedure. Students may wait for this information, as the timing of their application does not affect the selection process, provided the application has been submitted before the deadline of 23 November.
Track 2
Track 2 is open to staff members affiliated with the Faculty of Law who are interested in pursuing a PhD. Track 2 provides the opportunity to take two courses from the doctoral training programme in advance.
Candidates for Track 2 can apply directly to the Graduate School by submitting their CV and a cover letter.
Admission and conditions
A limited number of places are available for the PPP. Final selection of applicants is made by the Graduate School, based on:
- Evidence that the candidate has both an interest in and an aptitude for academic research (as shown by additional courses taken and/or research-related activities listed in the CV and transcripts submitted);
- Motivation for research, demonstrated in a cover letter.
Further important information:
- Track 1 is linked to student status: participation in Track 1 is only possible for students who are enrolled in a regular or advanced master’s programme at the Faculty of Law for the entire second semester.
- Attendance is compulsory for all PPP courses. When choosing two of the four courses offered, candidates must check that these do not conflict with the timetable of their master’s programme. Candidates must also declare that they are able to follow the prescribed programme in full in order to be admitted.
- For Track 2 candidates, the possibility of taking (certain) courses from the doctoral training programme may be limited due to available classroom capacity.
