As the outer space gets crowded with satellites operated by competing sovereign powers as well as private agents, European policy makers are facing an urgent question: How can Europe maintain its independence and technological sovereignty? The race to develop alternatives to GPS and Starlink is not merely about improving navigation capabilities—it embodies Europe's determination to secure its digital autonomy in an era where satellite communications underpin our entire economy and security infrastructure.
In this talk, experts from the European Space Agency join us to discuss the geopolitical implications of who controls orbital assets, ESA’s contribution to Europe’s growing space ambitions, challenges of cooperation among different nations and institutions involved in the European space policy, and what opportunities exist for young graduates among the stars.
Otylia Trzaskalska-Nuebel is a Senior Advisor in the Directorate of Stategy, Legal & International matters in the European Space Agency supporting the coordination of cooperation between ESA and the EU on present and future programmes as well as the efficient implementation of the FFPA and related Contribution Agreements.
Patryk Strzelecki is a contracts officer at the European Space Agency (ESA), providing legal support to ESA's space segment of the European Union funded Galileo program (Europe's Global Navigation Satellite System). Before procuring the Galileo satellites, he practiced law in dispute resolution and M&A domains.
