What better way to celebrate Pi Day than with pie? On Thursday 12 March, we will get into the Pi Day spirit a little early (the official date is 14 March) with a festive baking competition at the faculty. Students and staff are invited to bring along their very best homemade pie, which will be judged by an expert jury led by Heel Holland Bakt semi-finalist Jurian Calis. Will you be crowned Leiden Science Master Baker 2026?

For everyone – from enthusiastic home bakers to curious tasters

Whether you love experimenting in the kitchen or mainly come to watch and taste, everyone is welcome. Take part in the competition and compete for eternal Pi glory and awesome Leiden Science prizes, or drop by to enjoy plenty of pie.

Taking part in the baking competition – how it works

  • Register in advance via this registration form (by 9 March at the latest)
  • Bake your best pie (sweet or savoury, traditional from your home country, based on your grandmother’s recipe or inspired by your favourite chef – anything goes)
  • Bring your pie to the faculty on 12 March
  • Have your creation judged by the jury

Pi Day at the faculty

On Pi Day, the faculty revolves around π, pie and good company. The pies will be tasted and judged by both the jury and the audience. Visitors are very welcome to stop by and enjoy the event. Doors open at 14:45 hrs, and we will start tasting the baked goods at 15:00 hrs. Afterwards, an expert jury will announce which pies win prizes and who may proudly call themselves the winner with the title of “Leiden Science master baker.”
