When deciding what to study you undoubtedly read a lot of information about your study programme. Leiden University employs various systems to provide information about programmes and courses and to facilitate communication between lecturers and students.

The Prospectus contains information about all the courses within your study programme. Here you can find all you need to know about your programme. Via the online learning environment Brightspace you can communicate with your lecturers and submit assignments.

The Research Master in Linguistics is a specialised research-based programme. This two-year programme is designed to prepare students for a career in research, for example as a PhD student.

The Research Master’s in Linguistics offers a large and varied selection of subjects and languages. As a result, you have the choice to focus your study programme on a certain theme, or to create your own specialisation.

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics

The programme is based on the expertise present within the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), specifically in the areas of language diversity and the languages of the world. The students follow two Core courses (10 ec each), two Topics courses (5 ec each) and 10 ec worth of LOT courses, obtained during two LOT summer or winter schools. For more details on the Core and Topics courses, please visit the Prospectus.The remaining 50 ec can be chosen from a list of various courses taught in the different specialisations of the one-year MA Linguistics programme. These courses are on topics varying from approaches to language variation and language change to more disciplinary courses in syntax, phonology, semantics and phonetics.

You finish the program with a thesis, worth 30 ec. In addition, numerous conferences, workshops and lecture series are organised by LUCL, and students are encouraged to attend.

Extra requirement Linguistics (research)

Each student has to follow two linguistics courses of each 10 EC (so in total 20 EC) from the regular (one year) MA Linguistics Programme within Leiden, or from other regular (one year) MA Programmes at the Faculty of Humanities in Leiden that offer linguistics courses (Russian Studies, Asian Studies, etc.) with an extra requirement.
