Safe use of IT
- Make sure that your home computer, mobile phone and tablet are updated and have good security software.
- Use a trusted and secure (wifi) network.
- Be alert for phishing and fake emails. If you receive an unexpected email or an email from an unfamiliar sender, do not click on any links, open any attachments or enter any details. The university will never ask you for your passwords by email. If you think you have received a phishing email, report it in the helpdesk portal.
- Use OneDrive to save and share files safely.
- Close the browser completely after having been logged in. Do not save your passwords in your browser.
How to act: privacy and data breaches
Dutch and European legislation requires data breaches to be reported and penalties to be imposed. Leiden University asks students to take great care when dealing with confidential information.
Reporting data breaches
As of 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been implemented. This regulation includes articles regarding data breaches. A data breach occurs when personal data falls into the hands of third parties who should have no access to these data.
Leiden University is obliged to report data breaches to the Personal Data Authority. In case of a data breach during your research project (for example by losing a USB with confidential research data or passwords becoming public), please report this as soon as possible to the ISSC helpdesk (phone: +31 71 527 8888) or via abuse@leidenuniv.nl.
