Humanities thesis seminar

Are you a bachelor student who is writing a thesis in semester 1 of 2026-2027? Does your study program not offer a thesis seminar? Come and participate in the humanities thesis seminar, organised by the Writing Lab!

What is the humanities thesis seminar?

The humanities thesis seminar consists of participation in the thesis kick-off and one individual coaching session. To pass the humanities thesis seminar, you are required to attend both kick-off workshops and one individual coaching session. You are more than welcome to book more coaching sessions, with a maximum of five sessions per semester. These are always free of charge for students of the Faculty of Humanities!

Workshops

In the two mandatory workshops we will discuss important aspects of thesis writing:

  • A jump start to your thesis!
Topics include collecting and organizing literature, research questions, building your argument, and writing plans.
  • Writing a thesis: an efficient planning and structure
Topics include organizing and structuring your text, planning, how to avoid procrastination, writing style, paragraphs, and paraphrasing.

The workshops are offered in Leiden and The Hague. Please see our thesis kick-off page for the workshop dates and the registration form.

Individual coaching session

In the 45-minute individual coaching session you can zoom in on any aspects you need help with. Everything you discuss with your writing coach is confidential. You can choose one of our locations in Leiden or The Hague, or even opt for an online session. If you like, you can send your coach a writing sample beforehand which you then discuss during the meeting. More information, including how to book an appointment, can be found on the general page of the Writing Lab.
