From occupied territories and borderlands to regions scarred by recent war or civil unrest, archaeologists often find themselves working in politically sensitive and ethically complex environments. But what responsibilities do we have when the ground beneath our trowels is still contested?

In this open discussion, we’ll explore:

  • How archaeological work intersects with sovereignty, military occupation, and indigenous or minority rights.
  • The ethics of collaborating with or being funded by state actors in conflict zones.
  • Whether “neutrality” in fieldwork is ever truly possible—or desirable.

This is not a lecture but an open, moderated conversation among staff, students, and guests. All perspectives welcome.
