Community Engagement Service (CES)

The Community Engagement Service (CES) of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences aims to inform, advise, and support students regarding relevant (extra-curricular) work experience, with a strong focus on volunteer work.
Would you like to gain more practical experience, to develop yourself further, also outside the educational curriculum? Consider volunteering! There are lots of opportunities there, in different sectors, with different target groups, for flexible hours.

Why volunteer?

  • You are socially involved; you can do something for someone else
  • You gain practical experience, in terms of work and/or experience with target groups
  • You can use your knowledge and skills and further develop yourself personally and professionally
  • It is a good way to orient yourself on the labour market / to get more insight into the field and your own career wishes
  • You get to know new people and can build your network
  • You build up your CV!
  • Employers value volunteering as an important part of your profile.

Check out the LU Career Zone for more information on volunteering and where you can find great volunteer opportunities.

This month’s ‘Student experience’

Abel did an internship at talk show Jinek. Read more about his experiences.

“My name is Abel van de Sluis, I am a third-year student of political science. Besides my fascination with politics, I have always found journalism interesting. That is why I am taking a minor in Journalism and New Media this year. A benefit of this minor is that you get the opportunity to do an internship, to experience what it is like to be a journalist and if this would suit me. Since mid-January I have been doing an internship at talk show Jinek, where I am also involved in politics a lot. I often assist political reporter Jaïr Ferwerda in preparing and making his reports. For example, I keep in touch with spokespersons for ministers or political parties and I draw up questions. It is a great challenge for me to combine my knowledge of and interest in politics and journalism this way! I recommend all students to discover different fields of study; this way you can find out exactly what you want to do. If I had not studied journalism, I would always have doubts whether it would be something for me. Even if it turns out it is not, this is a great way of narrowing down!”

Abel found this internship via Mediastages.nl. This could be a nice place to start your search. You can also find more internship vacancies at the Leiden University Job Portal!
