Professor Mladen Popović is professor Old Testament and Ancient Judaism with special focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls at the University of Groningen. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and one of the leading Dead Sea Scrolls scholars in the world. As director of the Qumran Institute at Groningen, Professor Popović has directed several NWO- and ERC-funded projects that especially focused on the material side of the scrolls, using modern analytical methods like Palaeography and AI. Results from his latest project “The Hands that Wrote the Bible: Digital Palaeography and Scribal Culture of the Dead Sea Scrolls” will be in the focus of this study day.

20.00 – 21.00 (deur open vanaf 19.30): Egeria Lezing “Waar AI, natuurwetenschappen en geesteswetenschappen samenkomen: Innovatie in manuscriptonderzoek naar de Dode Zeerollen” (in Dutch).

In de 9e Egeria-Lezing vertelt Mladen Popović over de beroemde Dode Zeerollen en de mensen die ze schreven. De fundamentele vragen die hij behandelt zijn: wanneer zijn de manuscripten geschreven en door wie? Hij gaat nader in op de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in het onderzoek, waarbij verschillende methoden vanuit de AI, de natuurwetenschappen en de geesteswetenschappen worden gebruikt om antwoorden te vinden op deze vragen. Dit alles laat nieuw licht op de Dode Zeerollen schijnen en biedt een nieuwe kijk op de geschiedenis in het oostelijke Mediterrane Zee gebied in de Grieks-Romeinse periode (4de eeuw v.Chr. tot 2de eeuw na Chr.).
