Timo Kos visits University Sports Centre: ‘Sport brings people together’

As the end of the year approaches, the new University Sports Centre (USC) building is nearing completion. Vice-President of the Executive Board Timo Kos visited the USC, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, to see how work is progressing.

During his visit, Kos highlighted the importance of sport for well-being, friendship and human connection – core values the USC has embodied for over five decades.

Sport as stress relief and human connection

For Timo Kos, sport is much more than physical activity alone. ‘I love outdoor sports like windsurfing, skiing and rock climbing. Sport helps me clear my mind and is a great outlet for the stresses of everyday life. I got to know my best friends through sport, and I’d wish the same for all students.’ The new USC, says Kos, will offer just that: an environment where students and staff can not only exercise but also meet up and make new friends.

‘Sport improves your mental and physical health and greatly benefits student well-being – the University Sports Centre has been championing this for 55 years’

USC turns 55

Since it opened in 1970, the USC has been a corner of the university for exercising, meeting people and relaxing. Over the past five decades, it has inspired thousands of students and staff to get active and make new friends. The jubilee year is a moment not just to look back, but above all to look forward: with its new facility, the USC hopes to boost the well-being and vitality of the university community.

New sports venue in The Hague too

The sports centre in The Hague is also moving – to a modern and inspiring sports facility for students and staff in the Spui building.

Looking ahead: from construction to opening

With construction work in full swing, the building’s completion on 1 December 2025 is being eagerly awaited. The USC will welcome the first visitors to the new building in February 2026, marking a new phase in the centre’s 55-year history.
