Additional costs during your studies

On top of your tuition fees there are other additional costs to be taken into consideration. The amount of money you need depends very much on your lifestyle and spending habits.

Monthly costs

When studying at Leiden University you have to pay an annual tuition fee. On top of this there are other costs that need to be taken into consideration. These will amount to roughly between 890 and 1420 euro per month. Of course this is only an estimate. How much money you actually need depends very much on your lifestyle and spending habits.

Average monthly expenses

Below is a rough estimate of the costs of living for students in Leiden and The Hague. This is only a general indication as expenses can vary from one person to another.

Rent (including water, gas and electricity): 350 – 650 euro
General living expenses (food, clothing, telephone etc.): 300 – 350 euro
Transport costs (depending on whether you have a bike): 40 – 100 euro
Health insurance: 80 – 120 euro
Books and study materials (depending on your study programme): 50 – 100 euro
Social activities: 70 – 100 euro
Total: 890 – 1420 euro

Further info on housing costs

  • There is limited availability of accommodation in the €360 to €500 price range. Be aware that you may have to pay at least €550 per month for a room in Leiden or the Hague. 
  • The University Housing Office has accommodation in both Leiden and the Hague. If you will commute between Leiden and the Hague this will add approx. €100 to your monthly living expenses.
  • Students may be entitled to claim rent benefit. For more information and to apply please visit the website of the Dutch tax authority. Applications for rent benefit are the responsibility of the student but you can request assistance from De Leidse Rechtwinkel (free legal aid centre). If you encounter any problems with rent benefit please contact the International Student Adviser.
