Needle-stick injury

A needle-stick injury is an accident in which you are brought into direct contact with the blood or bodily fluid of another person or animal. Not only via a needle, but also via cuts, splashes or bites.

Are you inside a university building?
Call the building’s emergency number. This can be found on all telephones in the building and also on instruction cards that can generally be found on the inside of doors.

Examples of emergency situations:

• An accident in which someone has been, or risks being, injured
• Fire or explosion
• (Attempted) break in, theft, (sexual) violence or threats
• Exposure to chemicals, biological agents, genetically modified organisms, radioactive materials or (ionising) radiation

Data breach

A data breach is when personal information comes into the hands of people who are not supposed to have access to this information. Report all data breaches to the ISSC Helpdesk via 071 - 527 8888 or helpdesk@issc.leidenuniv.nl.
If you are unsure whether a data breach has taken place, contact the data protection officer.

Cybercrime

Have you discovered viruses, malware or other forms of cybercrime on a university computer? Or have you received a suspect email sent in the name of the university (phishing)? Report this to the ISSC Helpdesk via 071 - 527 8888 or helpdesk@issc.leidenuniv.nl.
If you are unsure whether cybercrime has taken place, contact your faculty’s information manager.

Suspicious situations in university buildings

If you spot something suspicious in a university building, such as a broken window or an open door outside opening times, notify the security service.

Instructions from your study programme

Some study programmes provide additional instructions, for example if laboratory work is involved. If your faculty or study programme has an additional tab on this page, make sure to read it carefully.

Always report emergencies and incidents

If you are involved in an emergency or incident, it is very important that you report it to the university within 24 hours - even if all ended well. This enables the university to improve its safety policies and avoid similar incidents in future. Your report will always be treated confidentially.

Report emergencies and incidents to incident@vastgoed.leidenuniv.nl. Make sure to state your name, telephone number, details of what happened and when it occurred.

If you reported the incident at the time of the event, there is no need to report it a second time.

Confidential counsellors

If you have experienced a threatening situation, such as (sexual) intimidation, aggression or violence, you can contact the confidential counsellor on unacceptable behaviour. If an incident leads you to suspect malpractice, you can report this to the confidential counsellor for malpractice.
The confidential counsellors have a fully independent position and anything you share with them will be treated with the utmost confidence.
