Middle Eastern Studies

Starting from 1 September 2019 the MA Middle Eastern Studies no longer has formal specialisations. Students who started before this date will be able to graduate in the specialisation of their choice (Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, Israel Studies, Modern Middle East Studies, Persian Studies, Turkish Studies) until 31 August 2020.

Programme information

The programme consists of two semesters, each having a weight of 30 EC. In the first semester students follow three courses of 10 EC each. One of these courses is the common core course: ‘Theories and Methods of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies’ (10 EC), which is obligatory for all students of the MA Middle Eastern Studies regardless of their specialisation.  In this course the emphasis lies on the relevance (or lack thereof) of contemporary theories, concepts and models from the social sciences for the study of the Middle East. Students are familiarised with a variety of methods to obtain and interpret information from different types of sources. In addition to this common core course, they take two courses of 10 EC each following their own interest.

In the second semester students take one more 10 EC course, take part in the ‘Thesis Seminar in Middle East and Islamic Studies,’ and they write their thesis (20 EC).
