Financial support for student board members
You may be eligible for financial support from the university if you fall behind in your studies as a result of board membership activities.
Different conditions and procedures apply if you are combining your studies with top-level sport, or if you are delayed in your studies as a result of exceptional personal circumstances. Read more about combining studying and top-level sport and personal issues.
You may be eligible for financial support if:
- you carry out board membership activities for an association that is a member of the Local Chamber of Associations (PKvL);
- you carry out board membership activities for a university management body or a study association, or;
- you help to organise an activity that is for the benefit of all Leiden University students.
If you wish to request financial support for board membership activities from Leiden University you must meet the following criteria:
- you must be registered as a student of Leiden University in the year in which the activities take place;
- you must be paying tuition fees to Leiden University;
- you must not have ended your studies more than three months before the date on which you receive payment of the financial support.
- you must have obtained the first year (propedeuse) diploma of your current study programme before you undertook the board membership activities in question (an exemption to this rule may be made for members of departmental teaching committees).
You may not receive financial support via this ruling if you have already received funds for the activity in question via the University Council Facilities Regulations or Leiden Student Council Regulations.
During your entire period of student registration at Leiden University you may request financial support for board membership activities for a maximum period of 18 months.
Requesting financial support for board membership activities
You may request financial support for activities that you carried out for a board that is mentioned in the Regulations on financial support for students (regeling financiële ondersteuning studenten - only available in Dutch). The amount of funds awarded is decided by either the Executive Board (acting on behalf of the Local Chamber of Associations -PKvV) in the case of requests concerning student associations; or by the assessor of the faculty in question in the case of requests concerning study associations and management bodies; or by the Leiden Assessors Committee (LAssO) in the case of requests concerning job fair organisation or activities.
You may also request financial support for board memberships activities if you take part in specific activities that are organised for the benefit of all Leiden University students, for example national student board activities. You can request more information from a student counsellor. Make sure to mention ‘financial support - board membership activities’ in any correspondence.
If you are not able to request financial support by way of the PKvV, your faculty assessor, or the LAssO, you may instead be able to do so via a student counsellor. In this case you can send your request to Ms. R.T. Biagioni. Make sure to mention ‘financial support – board membership’ in the title of your email.
When requesting financial support, the chairperson of the student or study association must complete a chairperson’s statement and have this signed by all members of the board. The amount of funds requested on the statement must be allocated to board members in amounts equivalent to whole or half months’ of financial support. Each board member must then individually request that the funds be paid out to him or her by completing a financial support – board membership form.
At this stage in the process the board member must meet all the above-mentioned criteria. 'Financial support – board membership' forms must be submitted before 31 December in the year in which the activity took place. Any requests submitted after 31 December will not be considered.
Amount and payment
Financial support for board membership activities amounts to €300 per month of academic delay, irrespective of whether you live at home or away.
